Thanksgiving month, day 23:
I am thankful for teachers.
A teacher is a person who will enable you to become what you are not. They don't make you into a linguist, or a carpenter, or a musician; but they make it possible for you to become one. This is a tremendous gift.
The best teachers I've known have all had two things in common: very high standards, and an unshakable belief that their students could meet them. This is rare, and to be treasured. Given those two things, otherwise ordinary people can work miracles.
Thank you, Jason Hughes, for believing that I could kick a target several inches higher than my head. Thank you, Charles Rushing MD, for believing that I could learn my way around the human body. Thank you, Diana Carman PT and Ellen O'Keefe DPT, for believing I could pass the national licensing exam. Thank you, Oscar Lee, for believing I could learn to say 'four sheets of paper cost four dollars and forty-four cents' in Mandarin. Much to my surprise, all of you were right.
Thanksgiving month, day 24:
I am thankful for my husband, who after nearly 31 years of marriage is still the light of my eyes and the delight of my heart. There is no one I'd rather spend time with, no one I trust more, and no one who knows me as well as he does. And when the one who knows you best is also the one who chooses to spend the rest of his life with you, you can tell the voices of depression and self-doubt where to stick it.
